We have children in three different school buildings this year. We are doomed: we will get every single illness that goes around.
When one of the kids is sick enough to stay home from school, I build the child a "nest": the child can choose the couch or the recliner, and I bring out pillows and throws, stuffed animals and favorite blankies. A congested child gets a vaporizer nearby. A barfy child gets a bucket. Anyone can have a cat delivered to them, though it's up to the cat if the cat will stay.

The child gets to choose what's on TV, and can watch it all day long if he or she wants to. Or I can bring the child books, or clipboards with paper to color on, or handheld video games. And I bought one of those knitting spool things (the kind that lets the child can knit a long, useless rope), and we bring that out only for sick kids.

Usual meals are abandoned: barfy children get saltines, toast, rice cereal, bananas, applesauce; non-barfy children can have anything that appeals, which is usually graham crackers, cinnamon toast, saltines. Children who are not barfing can have as much juice as they want instead of the usual "one cup per day" limit, and children who ARE barfing can make frequent requests for small amounts of juice or water or even soda.

Um, I LOVE this. Pictures of tragic sick children and all! I hope to have a similar policy when our kids are sick--I love the nest idea. I did not often get sick when I was a kid and most of the time I didn't really get nursed/nurtured... but I remember one time when I was so sick my dad had to pick me up from school in the middle of the day, and then I had a nap in my bed and then he brought me chicken noodle soup IN BED, and I thought that was pretty much the coolest thing ever.
I pretty much do the same thing. It's a TV on all day long sort of thing while Mommy cleans the house. SIck children don't play with toys, but instead veg on the sofa, so I take the opportunity to clean things up so they look tidy.
we love rice babies, you can make them hot or cold, but which ever way it makes my kids feel better!
abivens2@gmail.com
My kids love a warm rice sock for comfort. They also get unlimited time to play on my iphone.
When my kids are sick, they also get a "nest" of blankets and pillows on the couch. Also their choice of TV shows or movies and food. They will get a special treat if they feel up to eating.
I love that Mouse is snuggling William. (That IS William, right?)
We use the Similasan cough syrup and it works wonders.
My kids get the "cough all night" type of sickness for more often than the "barfy" kind of sickness. Maddie doesn't want a nest, she wants to be cuddled in a lap 24/7. She also gets unlimited TV and favorite snacks.
I let the sick child lie in my bed and watch movies all day. I'd let them use the couch, but the other children wouldn't be able to leave him/her alone. I also change their sheets because that's what my mom always did for me - clean sheets always smelled so good and made me feel better.
We don't really have sick child procedures. When Bub gets sick he still operates at Level 10, so he's just germy and active. But growing up, being sick meant Jello (no matter what we were sick with) TV and resting in bed.
Chicken soup, crackers, blankets, and laying on the couch watching videos does the trick for us.

My mom always made me grilled cheese, which for some reason had magical healing properties.
melduke26 at gmail dot com
For non-barfy illnesses, my dad would always come home from work with a chocolate milkshake for the sick kid. Such a treat, and not only do I continue the tradition with my own kids, I have been known to pop over with one for my dad when he's under the weather.
omg - the pictures are so cute/sad!
My kids get a blanket and pillow on the couch, control of the remote and, as long as there is no barfing, what they want to eat. (no sugar though, since I've read that lowers your immune system.)

My kids love to snuggle up on the coach with a movie on, their blankets, and water nearby. And of course some snuggles with mommy!!
I hope to somehow have such handy procedures for sick ones...right now it's rock-paper-scissors over who has to stay home with the kid. Usually not me. But in general, on the couch in front of the TV, with whatever he wants for lunch.
Staying in jammies and all the attention they want!
we have been blessed to not have had too many illnesses in the last 3 yrs. But when we do, we like to rest while watching favorite movies and reading lots of books.

I remember whenever my stomach was upset, my Mom would make a special trip to buy 7-Up.
That stuff works miracles. :)
Mine has not yet been sick (knock on wood) and is two months, so I'm thinking when the time comes it will be a constant holding cuddling trying to console her while we suck the slime from her nose with the scary hospital bulb she hates with a passion. :(. Not looking forward to it!
When my son is sick I am his live-in maid by choice. What he asks for, I get. We watch movies all day. He gets all the ginger ale he wants and popsicles. We usually eat soup with crackers.

Those are some very cute and pathetic little ones in those pics.
My mom used to give me chicken soup, toast, and 7 UP with a twisty straw on a little tray. She also had these little wooden Japanese dolls that I only got to play with when I was sick.
They just stay in bed all day and watch tv or sleep. They basically get whatever they ask for.

Oh cher, look at those poor sick babies! Wrench your heart out! You're such a good mama. Love the nest idea. I didn't get sick a lot when I was a kid and my mom really isn't the 'nurturing' type, but more the 'suck it up, it ain't that bad' type. :)
i always got apple slices on a little plate! still makes me feel better when i am sick now...
My son is older so he just knows that he needs to rest until he feels better! When he was little, I would read him lots of stories!

Bless those poor babies hearts!I hate seeing kids be so sick and barfy or puky.Well,I hate to throw up,always have.My mom would wet cold wash cloths for me and spin the cloth around every few minutes to make it cold again and apply it to pressure points to help me.I do this for my child too.I also give him a pep talk, saying it will get better soon and all that.

Chilly Willies!!!
My kids, when they are sick, want "Memaw's magic medicine." This is soda of whatever type is available poured into a freezer cup (provided by their Memaw, of course) that turns the liquid into a slushy. They have sworn by this curative since they were tiny, and they are 16 and 12 now.
We do the same- lots of tv and cuddle time. I even will pull the couch up so that she can lay on it directly in front of the tv. :)
Lots of cuddles and unlimited tv time.
My daughter is grown, but now when my grandson gets sick or has to come home from school he comes to my house. When he feels that bad we usually pile up in my bed (with the dogs of course) and watch cartoons until he goes to sleep.

I cuddle up on the couch with my baby when he's sick and we both watch kids' tv shows and drink juice and I give him as much mommy time as he wants. (This works because I only have one child so far.)
So far, my kids are too little to want to be alone when they are sick, so I hold them all the day and night. I am looking forward to when they can just LIE DOWN on their OWN for a few minutes. I will let them have whatever they want!
Maggie mostly just wants me to sit on the couch with her all.day.long. when she is sick so that is what we do. She gets to watch what she wants on TV and can request whatever to eat. She does allow me to get on my laptop while she lays listless next to me.
I was sent to my grandma's house when I was sick and my parents had to work. To me, being sick meant cups of tea and fruit cocktail syrup if barfy and cups of tea and cinnamon toast if not. Wonderful memories, actually. Thanks!

I was rarely sick as a child- no really, I don't think I ever once got to take the beloved pink bubble gum medicine after about age 3 or 4. But I do remember blankets and the couch and pillows.
Our own sick kids basically get to do whatever they want. Lots of tv and stories and cuddling (oh, feverish children are so deliciously cuddly!). We also go out for short walks if the child has been sick for days on end and a) feel up to it and b) is getting stir crazy. I also make malt-o-meal more often if we have sick kids.
(Puking kids sleep on a couple of layers of towel at night to avoid middle of the night bed stripping. Ugg.)
When I don't feel good my mom still brings me potato soup. She makes the best, most comforting potato soup in the world.
I rely on gingeale/7-up, smoothies for soar throats, honey toast, or whatever they want! Movies, coloring books, books are all on hand, too.

My kids get lots of cuddles when they're sick and get to pick the TV show. They can eat whatever sounds good to them, and we both usually stay in our jammies all day.

When my daughter had a sore throat I gave her a popsicles to soothe the soreness. Now she thinks that anytime she is sick, she gets to have a popsicle. When she had a stomach ache a few months ago, she came to me asking for a popsicle to make it feel better. I had to tell her that popsicles don't help tummyaches, only sore throats.
mmburdette22@yahoo.com
my mom would always give me some soup, saltine crackers and lemon lime soda pop and let me watch a movie or listen to a cd and sometimes she's rub my back.
I let them eat or drink in front of the TV. Normally this is a no-no!
When my daughter is sick, I keep her comfy in her room and I check on her every hour. Each time I check on her I bring her a new surprise from a glass of juice, to a candy, to a magazine, to a DVD.
Thanks!

We hunker down with blankets on the couch and watch movies, play Wii(quiet games), read books. Also plenty of gatorade, ginger ale, jello and soup!
If they feel up to it we do arts and crafts or a puzzle, if not than it is cuddling under a blanket in our jammies and vegging out on Spongebob.

I would love to get sick at your house! Sounds like fun. At our house, if you're sick enough to stay home from school, then you stay in bed. If that weren't the rule, the kids would be faking sickness all the time! I grew up with a Dr. for a father, and there was never much sympathy for being sick. You just went on with life. Pedialite, ginger ale, saltines, and toast are the typical fare for a sick child in our home.
kgdasilva2002 at yahoo dot com
I love your methods!
I grew up with similar...spot on the couch, juice, crackers, toast, and ALLLLLL the tv I wanted. That was a biggie!
I always feel like I'm a terrible soother. I make a "nest" like you say.. lots of blankets on the couch. But not before a towel. And the kid gets a bucket. And the remote and all the TV they can stand. If the child is barfing they get no food for as long as I can get away with it, and only sips of drinks. I have a legitimate phobia of barfing so I have to work hard at this, people! :) Usually the other kids will sit with the sick kid, which I find so sweet. When I was a kid I remember my mom used to stroke my hair up and around my ear. I loved that, but my kids wont' sit still for it.
Sick children get the choice of mommy's bed or the couch, and (s)he can watch any or all the kid movie DVDs as s/he so desires. With (minimal) griping from Mommy. :-)
The sick kids can stay in their bed (and I bring in a little tv to their room) or on the couch. Mostly pampered all day long with whatever they want.
Cuddling. Lots and lots of cuddling. (My boys are still babies).
I let my daughter lay in my bed were she can watch TV or a movie and I bring her ginger ale, soup or crackers if she feels like eating.

When I was little, my dad would always pick up a box of popsicles at the store on his way home from work if my sister or I was sick. Also, he would move the little black and white tv with "rabbit ear" antenna from their bedroom into the sick child's bedroom. I continue the tradition by allowing the sick child to watch as much tv as desired, though not in their own rooms as our televisions are too big to move around very easily. I don't do the popsicle thing, either: don't really want to try to scrub red popsicle vomit out of my light tan sofa!
My little one has not been sick yet (knock on wood) but I remember when we were sick as kids my mom use to let us sleep in her bed and we got lots of soup, vicks, and grilled cheese sandwiches. Grandma always gave us a shot of homemade whiskey (I would NOT recommend this she is very old school).
I remember my mom making me 7-Up pops when I had chicken pox. I had them in my throat and it helped so much.
Brianna
briannakemper@yahoo.com
When Alex is sick he basically rules the house. He gets to sleep with us, eat whatever he wants, watch all the TV he wants (even Umi Zoomi, I hate that show). The only thing he gets denied is soda, that's still on his not allowed to have list. Everything else is up for grabs until he's feeling better.
I have fond memories of my mom doing similar things when we were sick as kids (which was quite a lot, having been a preemie and all). The nest on the couch, saltines & graham crackers. And if it was a non-barfy illness (or once we progressed passed barfiness) we could have whatever appealed. Even if it meant sending my dad on a drive-thru run for soft serve. Or the year that I had pneumonia over Halloween when I was in 3rd grade, and I was too sick for trick-or treating so my sister and brother had to pool their loot together and divide it 3 ways, setting mine aside for when I was better. The all time best way of soothing me when I was sick was a special way my mom would rub my head until I would fall asleep. It is still the best thing when I'm sick or suffering a nasty migraine, even 30 years later. But only the way my mom does it, of course.
As an aside, I just have to say thank goodness for similasan. That $10 bottle of allergy relief eye drops has done more for my dog's repeated eye ulcer than any of the 3 (yes, THREE!) surgeries or countless other treatments and procedures we have had to put him through over the last 16 months and counting!
My son has not ever been sicker than a head-cold (he's only 10 months, so I know it's coming) so I don't have much to say about comforting him except rock him as much as he wants and free cuddles all day (or night, as it were). Poor things are so pitiful when they're sick!
Unlimited tv access and lots of ice cream made being sick almost worth it when I was a kid.
My daughter gets to watch way more tv than usual when she's sick. We usually spend all day on the couch watching tv or with books or games. She also really likes to be able to sleep with me instead of in her own bed.
amberf_03@hotmail.com
I was pretty much left to my own devices on sick days as a kid. I think my mom always thought we were faking. For my own son he likes to be cuddled and rocked. I also sing him songs which usually makes us both feel better. I know he will outgrow this some day, but for now it is healing for us both.

When I was a kid, my mom cozied us up on the couch, skootched the coffee table next to the couch and loaded it with coloring books, story books, puzzles, etc. and then served us "sick" food (a bowl of peaches, toast and 7-up). The best part, though, was when she'd sit with us. A kid mostly needs mom when they are under the weather!

when i was little my mom set me up by the tv and brought me milkshakes and fries. not the best healing technique but i loved it. my son gets elderberry syrup that he calls black medicine and would be set up on the couch all day if anything ever stopped him from running around.
Luckily, my little guys don't get sick often. When they do, it's usually a doosie, and they usually want to just sleep or lay on the couch. I'll let them snuggle with me on the recliner and we spend the day resting.

I *love* the idea of the "nest." I really don't remember getting any specialness when I was sick as a kid... I mean, I was taken care of and babied, but not to where I remember anything that I wouldn't have normally been allowed to do anyway. Aside from staying home from school...so, I guess that. I agree that the photos of sick children are sweet. (My parents took photos of us when we were sick, too - I have to remember to do the same with my kids.) My mom used to give us Jello mixed with hot water - like Jello tea - once we could keep food down. I'd do the same with mine, except my kids don't do so well with artificial food coloring.

My daughter has been sick with the stomach virus twice, and she got it pretty badly. Each time lasted approximately 5 days. She was so sick that she didn't care for TV or a video. She just laid in bed taking tiny sips of Gatorade every 30 minutes. When I was growing up though, I watched countless hours of TV when I was sick. Now that I think about it, I think TV only made me more tired.

My mom used very similar tactics when we were sick. We could camp out on the couch, have small sips of soda if we were sick, and watch tv. I think it's hard being a grown-up and getting sick with no one to take care of you!
My mom never let me sleep in her bed ever, but when I was sick she made me a pallet on the floor of her room and I got to drink lots of orangeade. Kinda sounds like torture now, but it was special then!

Definitely get them nice and comfy on the couch with books or their favorite movie. Bring them soup and crackers and some pedialyte...and some sweets too unless their stomach is upset.
My mother would always read to me when I was really sick. When I was getting better she'd teach me how to crochet.
Thanks for the contest.

My wife does a lot of the nurturing when the kids are sick, to be honest. But I will read to them, and watch movies. When they feel well enough to start playing videogames, that's the signal that they are feeling better.
When I was a kid my Mom used to make a "hot toddy", which was a thimble full of whisky, sugar, and water. Which would be completely unacceptable now, but back then nobody blinked an eye!

My son has severe asthma, so sick days have become a routine of their own. I fix a “bed” on the couch with blankets and pillows, and help him get as comfortable as possible. Usually he wants just water, but occasionally, I’ll give him Diet 7Up or Sprite. I give him food to graze on rather than big meals. He loves movies, so we keep plenty handy to help pass the time.

Awww little cuties! As a kid my mom always bought me a book to read to keep my busy (Yes I was a nerd, lol). It always comforted me though! :)

I give the kids lots of hugs and snuggles, and try to let them do things they like - which usually means watching shows on hulu!

My mother would always feel my forehead/temple with the inside of her wrist (I don't trust my judgment that much). She'd offer me jello, ice cream, and 7-Up. and, if I needed medicine, she'd crush up an aspirin in a spoon of jelly (something I would never do).
Lots of rest is what helps my kids the most. Plus I let them have soda when they are under the weather.
