Kellogg's, Week Seven: Quality Mornings, and a $100 Visa Gift Card Giveaway

This is sponsored content by BlogHer and Kellogg's.

This is the seventh of twelve weekly posts sponsored by BlogHer and Kellogg's. EACH POST will have its own $100 gift card giveaway. The plan is to have each giveaway start on Tuesday and run until the following Monday.

This week's topic is Quality Mornings: How do you start the day on a positive note? And do you always have breakfast in the morning?

I'll start with the second question because I already answered it in another of these posts: HECK YES we always have breakfast. Do _I_ always have it? Er. But the kids always do. Always! ...Although, this is not the superhuman feat I'm implying, because so far only one of them has ever wanted to skip breakfast, and we've let him try skipping and then he's complaining he's hungry when it's still 2 hours until lunch.

I know Kellogg's is paying me so you may find my cereal-related opinions of suspicious worth, but they haven't been paying me for the last ELEVEN YEARS and I've still given the kids cereal most mornings. I think of cereal as the good choice: many cooked breakfasts are high in fat and/or sugar, as are many "convenience" options, but cereal is full of, like, GRAINS! Grains are GOOD! And sure, you can get super-sugary or low-quality-grains cereals, but there are tons with very low sugar and/or very good grains, or ones where the sugar seems "worth it" to me (like in Mini-Wheats, where the little frosted part is the only way I'll eat the healthy good-grains part).

Now, for the other question. There's another mother who waits at the bus stop with me in the mornings, and she says she tries very, very hard not to snap or grouch at the kids either right before school or right before bed. She and I are both impatient types and would have a natural tendency to say things like "Come ON, let's GO, what is the PROBLEM here?!" in the mornings, but we try to work against our natural tendencies. It doesn't always work, since those also tend to be the two times of day when the children seem to need the most pushing and reminding and managing, but we TRY.

I also make sure to make my good-bye affectionate, even if my "trying" has been more like "failing" that day: I'll say, "Bye, honey, have a good day at school!" or I'll leave out "honey" if it's an older kid who might be embarrassed.

To enter the giveaway, leave a comment on this post by Monday, September 27, 2010 about either (1) how you keep mornings all cheery and positive or (2) whether or not you always have breakfast. Entrants must be U.S. residents at least 18 years old. One entry per post per person. To get an additional entry, blog or tweet the contest and then leave a comment with a link to the post or tweet.

I almost never have breakfast. I'm usually in such a rush in the morning I don't have time to do anything besides shower and go. And usually I don't even get the shower in.

I used to skip breakfast all the time, but since I got my lap-band I eat it pretty much every day, and since I got pregnant I DEFINITELY eat it every day. The only exception was the day of my three-hour glucose test when I had to fast, and I almost fainted by the time I was allowed to eat again. Ugh.

I usually eat breakfast. But I wonder if I get a demerit because my kids eat at their various places-they-go. Like, at school or at the daycare. Although the child that goes to daycare usually has a snack in the car and the child that goes to school may or may not choose to have breakfast depending on what they are having. But on weekends, he will usually skip breakfast and isn't hungry until around lunch time.

Jana said...

We always eat breakfast. I may not get to eat until the oldest has left for school, but I always have something; otherwise, I find myself snacking all morning.

Shari said...

I always eat breakfast, usually with the kid but sometimes in the car. Cheery and positive?? Um...haven't figured that one out yet. He's a dawdler and I'm not a morning person so it doesn't go so well. Usually the kid is pretty happy by the time he is leaving for school and he gives me a big hug and kiss, so that's positive.

I always eat breakfast at work. My husband and I have gotten into saying trite sayings that our parents overused with us. It makes both of us laugh as we're starting the day. The current faves are "Make it a great day!" and "A smile is the cheapest thing you can do to improve your looks!".

Tracy said...

No breakfast for me...unless you count my starbucks drip coffee. My kids have a small snack before we leave the house as they both eat breakfast at daycare/before school programs.

Even if I'm super grumpy I ALWAYS say "I love you" and "have a good day!" May be morbid but what if that was the last thing I said to him? Anyway, I always eat breakfast, always always, and it is usually a relatively healthy cereal with skim milk.

Buttercup said...

I eat breakfast while sitting at my desk, doing my morning e-mail read. Changing my routine from trying to squeeze in breakfast before I catch the bus to eating once I'm sitting at work has made my mornings much more pleasant.

Julie said...

Seeing as I am almost always hungry, yes, breakfast is a must. And it's usually cereal. My kids take after me, and typically the first thing out of their mouths after "Good Morning" Is "Let's have breakfast."

My husband does eat breakfast, but it's a fluid definition, as during the week this can consist of a sandwich and chips or a toaster pastry eaten in the car (I will never get the crumbs out). But on the weekends, you'd think he was one of those hotel chefs making ommlettes for everyone.

Mama Bub said...

I used to always skip breakfast, but now I can't imagine doing that. Maybe because I've spent a long time pregnant and breastfeeding, it's hard to imagine a time when I could go more than a couple of hours without eating.

I eat breakfast with my husband before he leaves for work at 4:30, then go back to bed until my daughter wakes up at 7:30. I rarely have time to eat with her, so thank goodness I get something in early on. I am not a morning person, but I TRY to start the day out on a good note since I have a munchkin to spend the day with :)

We start each morning with a snuggle. I love it when my kid is still a tiny bit sleepy and willing to cuddle up so I can stroke her hair and pretend she's still a tiny baby.

I make sure my daughter eats breakfast every morning, but I have never been a breakfast person.

Christy said...

Kids and I both eat breakfast EVERY day. There's no way I could make it until lunch without eating. Perhaps this has something do to with the fact that I've been pregnant or nursing for nearly 5 years straight now.

Jenn said...

I think this is like being a morning person or a night person- I hardly ever eat breakfast, and I've always been that way, it takes me an hour or two to really wake up and want anything. My oldest daughter is like me, but my younger daughter is like her Dad and they both have to eat first thing, like as soon as their eyes are open.

Kids and I always have breakfast. Mine may only consist of a cup of tea, but usually includes a couple slices of toast. (Once is a while cookies are substituted for the toast. Yeah, and don't tell me I am the only one who has ever done that. We all know better.) Kids usually have cereal or toast. Or in the case of my son, cereal, toast, and a couple of cookies.
As for tips for starting school, we are homeschooling for the second year now, all three, and my tip is that mom needs to realize that she really is going to get nothing else done for the next three weeks until kids start getting into the grove. Then, after that, only expect small miracles of getting anything done.

I have two small boys, so there is no possible way to ENSURE that the day starts off on a positive note. Little boys are prone to be unreasonable about the silliest things (I didn't want ketchup on my sandwich today, or a fight to brush their teeth). I try to stay on our tight schedule - not leaving much room for negotiation. Get them up and out the door quickly and efficiently. Avoid conflict. Never try to make any important decisions (like if a they can have a playdate this weekend) during our morning routine. Most important of all, we start with a kiss and hug!

Guinevere said...

I always have breakfast, though it's usually not cereal. My preference is for oatmeal, or toast with peanut butter and banana, or a smoothie with protein powder... those things don't make me quite as hungry quite as quickly.

I start the day in a positive way by getting my adorable kid out of bed!

My kids are big, big, big fans of Weird Al. Listening to Weird Al certainly keeps us cheerful in the mornings--we're particularly partial to the Food Album.

The kids always have breakfast, either cereal, oatmeal, peanut butter toast, muffins, fresh fruit, bagels, or some combination of those things for my 12 year old son (always hungry that one).

I wait until I get to work to eat breakfast because when the kids are eating breakfast, I'm in the shower. :)

I ALWAYS eat breakfast. And I ALWAYS eat cereal. This is the absolute truth, and yet I'm feeling all happy and smug and brown-nose-y because HI KELLOGGS! CEREAL ROCKS!

My kids and husband always eat breakfast too, and they also ALWAYS eat cereal. We buy healthy kinds- sugar cereals are a major and RARE treat.

I may have written JUST TODAY about how stressed I am when my kid WON'T eat. (So! Stressed!)

As for a peaceful morning? Still working on that.

I always have breakfast and it varies from day to day - most days it is either cereal, yogurt or a combination of the two.

In the morning I used to have a great routine where some upbeat music went on first thing and it set a great tone for our day....and then Lexi started getting up in the 5 A.M. window and my day started with Elmo so that I could lay down for 49 more minutes. I'm not sure what to do about this....but the music has got to come back and Elmo must go. La-lalala is no way to start a morning.

First of all, I'd like to compliment your ability to come up with 12 weeks of posts about CEREAL. I had no idea there'd be so much to discuss re: breakfast foods.

I almost always eat breakfast. If I don't, my blood sugar drops and I get super cranky. And no one wants that first thing in the morning.

I try and be cheerful, as my kids are both morning people, but sometimes it's VERY DIFFICULT because my kids are both morning people. I mean, really, what is there to smile about at 5am, Sam? Answer: NOTHING.

Jolene said...

We're on such a tight schedule in the mornings that there is no time to be grumpy or cheerful. I eat breakfast every day, usually yogurt with granola and fruit mixed in.

Saly said...

2 of my children are “eat breakfast THE SECOND I wake up” type children and one is a take it or leave it kind of gal. She, like my mother and me, gets nauseous if she eats right away. I always eat breakfast on work days, but not until I get to work. At home, it’s usually a brunch of some sort. But I ALWAYS have coffee. As soon as I can. I need my coffee.

And as for the before school/before bed niceties? I do try, I do. But, um, I usually don’t succeed. Those are the 2 times of day where I need things to be done RIGHT NOW! And sadly, asking for them sweetly gets no results.

I'm picking question No. 2.

I am not sure if I have breakfast everyday, technically it may be called lunch since some days I don't wake up till 11 or so. That's bad isn't it? Because thn that means I wasted the whole day! But I will say that my boys and I tend to eat cereal at all hours of the day. Its healthier thn a donut and satisfies our sweet too.

Yes to breakfast everyday! It's hard to argue with the facts that it is healthier for you and kids to have a good breakfast and also creates more energy and clearer thinking for school (or work!). Even when the kids or I dont feel like it, I push because I know it is important
Quality mornings start with a good mind set. Knowing that a hurried and anxious morning is not good for kids OR parents, I have learned to just adopt a more nonchalant, not-expecting-PERFECT attitude and setting this tone in the mornings (even when you dont always feel like it) is important for your kids sense of security and good health...physically and otherwise!

thanks much!

Mornings are mornings and so I wouldn't say "cheery" is going to happen. However, that isn't to say they aren't positive. They are more endured through a sleepy fog until fully awake quite a while later. But nothing particularly negative about that.

Breakfast every day? Kids yes. I personally wait an hour or so. I don't really like anything cold in the morning so unless it it is warm, I just wait until later.

I definitely always eat breakfast. I am a total monster if I don't and cannot function until I've eaten!

I enjoy sitting in my favorite chair & having the sunlight shining in the window while I soak in the word from the Son of God...my personal devotions help to start my day right!

During the week it's my daughter and I in the mornings for breakfast...except on Thursday's when her OT is here during that time also. Weekend flip: my husband is home with her for breakfast, while I go running. Usually on Friday I make a pot of oatmeal/wheat germ/ flax meal combo and we eat that Sat and Sunday mornings (good fuel!)
