Kellogg's, Week Two: Summer Fun, and a $100 Visa Gift Card

This is sponsored content by BlogHer and Kellogg's.

This is the second of twelve weekly posts sponsored by BlogHer and Kellogg's. EACH POST will have its own $100 gift card giveaway. The plan is to have each giveaway start on Tuesday and run until the following Monday.

This week's topic is Summer Fun as Summer Ends: if school hasn't yet started in your area, what summer things are you doing with the last bits of summer that remain?

During the school year we miss the swimming pool the most, so we've been going almost every day. We play outside a lot, and it feels nice to just run out without having to mess with outerwear. We set up the sprinkler. We play with sidewalk chalk in the driveway. We scooter. We'll have an ice cream treat at least once more, maybe twice. We'll go out for burgers to commemorate the last day of swimming lessons.

And this will sound a little odd and not at all parent-magaziney, but I'm also letting them have plenty of television and video games. During the school year, they're not allowed to do either until they've finished their homework, but they usually don't finish their homework until after dinner, and Go To Room Bedtime (as opposed to Lights Out Bedtime) isn't long after that. So while it's still summer I'm allowing the Wii and Kimpossible marathons.

To enter the giveaway, leave a summer-fun-related comment on this post by Monday, August 23, 2010. Entrants must be U.S. residents at least 18 years old. One entry per post per person. To get an additional entry, blog or tweet the contest and then leave a comment with a link to the post or tweet.

For the complete rules, see The Complete Rules, Week Two.

Great topic! We're savoring the fresh summer fruits and veggies from the farmer's markets while they last....

Catherine said...

Enjoying lots of walks and the temperature of the lake near by. Also - field tomatoes! yummm!

Susan said...

We're making salsa, playing in the sprinkler, enjoying not packing lunches just yet...

Mimi said...

We're eating tons of peaches and popsicles, going to the river, to the beach, playing in the yard A LOT. Anything outside!

Leanne said...

We are eating dinner on the patio, enjoying popsicles, and scarfing down the tomatoes coming out of the garden.

Jess said...

Eek! Are we really already to the point where only last bits of summer remain? No no no no no.

We're starting to think about what we want to do in FUTURE summers, since apparently our last kid-free summer is winding down. Next year the baby will be too small for most kid-oriented summer activities, but it's never too early to start researching, right? I want to find a nice family-friendly pool nearby, and also the Denver Botanical Gardens just opened a $4 million kid-oriented garden that sounds fantastic, and the Denver Children's Museum is supposed to have an amazing exhibit targeted toward infants. Those are all on the list for future summers. Yay!

Summer fun is a wading pool filled with sandy water from the kids running to the sandbox and back! I love water time!

Shari said...

I am sincerely hoping that we will make it to the beach at least once before the weather gets too cold..

Oh man, school already started here! But, we tried staying up late and playing outside at dusk. We can't do that now that he has to go to bed early.

leashah said...

Sleeping in still!!!

And trying to get to the Zoo at least one more time...

Catching fireflies is probably my favorite part of summer.

Jessica said...

My baby is due in two weeks so I'm not a very fun mama right now; I just want to sleep. But my girl and I went to the craft store and she picked out a bunch of dollar wooden things and sons paint and has been painting for hours!

Amy said...

We are enjoying the last few weeks of warm weather by taking evening walks around the neighborhood.

sara said...

Making our own ice cream, eating up all of the garden bounty, going on (short) nature walks (because it is so hot), running the in sprinklers!

Anne said...

This week is PACKED with summer fun around these parts. In the next five days I have two baseball games at Wrigley Field, a boat architecture tour of Chicago, and an outdoor concert with my family. This is the most fun week I've had this summer.

It's still over 100 degrees here and I've started meeting them at the bus stop with popsicles.

Kristin said...

I have little kids, so no school yet, but we are taking lots of walks before the Wisconsin winter.

Saly said...

We are staying up late, playing outside, and sitting on the porch watching the sun set.

Beth said...

my little one is only 3.5, so our routine has not changed THAT much from regular pre school time vs summer time. she still goes to her babysitter while we are at work, but she does spend more time with me, husband and mil since there is no school. during that time (and on the weekends) we've been doing pool, play outside, etc.
swistle: i have to know- how do you bring all 5 to the pool yourself. it stresses me out to no end to bring ONE non-swimmer (she's learning, but it still stresses me that she can't yet swim, i'm all worried she's going to drown even when i am RIGHT there, weird, i know). how do you keep an eye on all 5? i guess not all of them swim welll yet?

Fran said...

School starts on Monday here and we will miss going swimming the most. But with the first days of school, comes the knowledge that Fall will be here soon and our 100+ degree days are almost over :)

Elizabeth said...

Off topic, but I am SO JEALOUS that you have all those children who can play WITH EACH OTHER!
Anyway, mostly we are hanging out at the pool as well, and we've been watching a lot of movies too!

Barb @ getupandplay said...

We've been playing in the sprinkler a lot outside. And I just graduated (finally) a few weeks ago so I feel like my summer is just starting! We have made it up into the mountains a few times but still need to hit the pool a few more times!

Julie said...

We've been getting lots of pool time, park time (after the thermometer dips below 100 degrees), and plenty of ice cream (none of which comes from the ice cream man because he doesn't show up in our neighborhood until November for some such nonsense). I know as a mom I should be thrilled by the notion of returning to school, but I think I might be the saddest of everyone!

Swistle said...

Beth- I take all five for swim lessons on my own---but if they're not each in a teacher-supervised group, Paul and I take them together and split them up. The two oldest are safe to swim "on their own" (lifeguards on duty), and we split the three youngest.

I am so jealous that you guys get to spend so much time outside! Since our temps are still in the high 90's, we're spending a lot of time inside. But we've really enjoyed going to the neighborhood pool, the occasional zoo trip and tomorrow we're taking the train into the city and meeting my hubby for lunch as our last hurrah.

Getting together with a few other families for a BBQ - good food, good friends, good fun!

Today we put on our bathing suits (me! Pregnant! To scare the workers next door who are building an addition on my neighbor's house!) and got to work washing the dogs in the baby pool. I have to tell you, it's the longest my toddler has stayed put while outside IN HER LIFE. And that, my friend? Was SUMMER LOVE for me! WOO!

Our summer in Texas will last for another 2 months, so we're not cramming anything in yet. Honestly, it's so hot here that playing outside is a misery, but we do try and swim in the evening a couple of times a week.

Yay for summer fun!! For me it's farmer's market veggies and cooking them on the grill on the deck!

robynB said...

We are still riding the excitement from the World Cup and playing lots of soccer in our yard.

We also allow extra tv time in the summer and balance it with plenty of outside play time! This year we got a pool pass and the kids favorite outside activity is going to the pool!

chellebird said...

The last free Wednesday outdoor concert is tonight, so my friends and I will be staying late and soaking up the ends of this wonderful Chicago summer, making up for last year's cold, sad excuse for a season.

Kate said...

Oh, the swimming pool for sure! Early-morning hikes and runs in the nature preserve are a good bet for me, too.

Dawn said...

We also spend almost all of our time outdoors. We live on the east coast so that means lots of trips to the beach and the boardwalk. We also have a good number of local fairs. We have a pool so we swim a lot and do the chalk thing but the beach is our favorite for now.

Suzanne said...

We're suddenly rushing to do ALL the summer things we never ever get around to doing during the first two months of summer - the beach, the lake, the boat, farms, the aquarium, etc. My new favorite is our brand new membership at Mystic Seaport. Of course, we could go in the winter too, since the baby is still a baby and not in any sort of school but being outside for hours in the winter is just...not fun.

bebehblog at gmail dot com

Linda said...

We are already in school, but we're still doing plenty of outside playing after school, stopping for slurpees or at the ice cream shop on the way home from school, swimming on the weekends, etc. We also have a fall break in mid-September, so we are amusement park bound for that - hopefully without the long lines since everyone else is trying to get there NOW.

Nikki said...

The Indiana State Fair is the signal that summer is ending. We scored free tickets, which kept us from having to take out a second mortgage on our house to buy fair food for dinner. But the kids loved everything we saw!

Gina said...

Our favorite summer fun activity is canoeing and kayaking, but we haven't gotten to do enough of it this year!

Joanne said...

Hey Nikki, we went to the Indiana State Fair, too! My kids aren't quite old enough to really dig it, yet. My two year old daughter only wanted to sit on the fake pig, and wanted nothing to do with the real ones.

It's been super hot here and so unpleasant, BUT this week is gorgeous, so we've been playing outside, going to the park, swinging.

barb. said...

I have been letting them play endless videos games/watch too much TV, too! They're kids and it's summer time. It's really the only time you get to be a total bum without consequences.

They do play outside, though, read books, play with their toys, etc., and I take them to karate four times a week -- so I don't really feel Bad Mother Guilt when the Zelda theme is on.

I did Christmas in August.

I know it sounds lame, but my kid was sunburned from all that swimming, and I was tired of the heat! So we spent a whole day pretending it was Christmas!

We put on our matching Christmas jammies. We made snowman pancakes. We watched all the "Forbidden" Christmas DVDs that only come out after Halloween and must be put away in mid-December. And we baked chocolate chip cookies. SHE LOVED IT.

We are having a good summer as we complete Month 17 of our home remodel -- we see light at the end of the tunnel. Now we are going to celebrate with a picnic at the beach.

We love going to the local farmer's market Friday evening and then going up to the mountains near our home on Saturday. It's hard to come home Sunday evening knowing it's back to reality the next day.

Enjoying the outdoors before the colder weather hits. Bike rides, picnics and barbecues and backyard games are some of the things we do for fun during summer.

It was hard to make this summer fun with the intense and humid heat we had but we made the most of water fun at the lake and gardening in our backyard in the early morning, cooler hours.

visiting family, eating watermelon together, enjoying air conditioning in over 100 degree Texas summers, staying cool!

Daytime is so hot and humid this late in the summer. The best fun is either at school or weekend evening double-features at the area drive-in theather.

At our house, summertime means eating dinner on the patio, sticky-sweaty kids who have fulfilled a hard day of play and as many trips to the water park as we can manage!

Summer fun huh? We've been making the local fair rounds. We went to the state fair earlier this month. This week we're planning a trip to our old county fair (where my husband & I grew up) and our county fair here (yes, they are the same week). Fun stuff!

Oh, our favorite thing is hanging out in the pool and playing in the water. I hope we can still do this for a few more weeks before the water gets too cold...
