Kellogg's, Week Three: Favorite Breakfast Cereals, and a $100 Visa Gift Card

This is sponsored content by BlogHer and Kellogg's.

This is the third of twelve weekly posts sponsored by BlogHer and Kellogg's. EACH POST will have its own $100 gift card giveaway. The plan is to have each giveaway start on Tuesday and run until the following Monday.

This week's topic is, understandably, what are your favorite Kellogg's cereals? And are there any Kellogg's cereals you enjoyed as a child that your children now like?

Perhaps, like me, you don't always notice the maker of your cereal? In that case you are in luck, because I am sympathetic to your plight and have copied and pasted this chart from the Kellogg's site to make it easier to answer the question:

When I was a child the Granola was my favorite, but I also liked ALL the sweet ones: Froot Loops, Honey Smacks, Corn Pops, Cocoa Krispies, Apple Jacks. We only got them when we visited our grandparents, or a friend's house, or when we went camping and got the little boxes, because I was a child of the '70s and was lucky my parents allowed us to have something as sweet as RAISIN BRAN.

What I remember is that in those multi-packs of little cereal boxes, the non-sweet ones got left for last---which is how I discovered how yummy Product 19 was. It was one of the ones my brother and I considered non-yummy because of being insufficiently sugared, but the deal was that we had to eat ALL the little boxes and not just the sweet ones, so I ate Product 19 and...well, hey! It's...YUMMY! I need to go write it on the shopping list; why haven't I been eating Product 19? (Also, I would love to have been in on the meeting where they decided to actually name it that.)

My favorites NOW are the Mini-Wheats (I like strawberry, and I eat them dry with a glass of milk on the side), and the Granola, and the Raisin Bran Crunch. When I'm pregnant, I crave the Frosted Flakes. And we use the Corn Flakes and the Rice Krispies in recipes.

My kids like the strawberry Mini-Wheats and the Cracklin' Oat Bran. They sometimes like the Granola, but the kids who eat it without milk manage to make SUCH a mess of it, I tend not to offer it.

To enter the giveaway, leave a comment about your favorite (or your kid's/kids' favorite) Kellogg's cereal on this post by Monday, August 30, 2010. Entrants must be U.S. residents at least 18 years old. One entry per post per person. To get an additional entry, blog or tweet the contest and then leave a comment with a link to the post or tweet.

For the complete rules, see The Complete Rules, Week Three.

I am sort of addicted to Special K with Red Berries.

Jess said...

Um, the only cereal I ever eat is Cheerios, which apparently is not made by Kellogg. Does this disqualify me from winning? I will say I like Rice Krispies in baked goods. But I don't think I've ever had a bowl of them just plain, with milk.

I love Cracklin' Oat Bran, but am sad because it's not in the stores all that often.

I actually don't eat cereal that much these days, except some Kashi granola once in a blue moon. You'd never have thunk it from how much Cocoa Krispies my little brother and I would go through when we were kids.

barb. said...

The kids love Frosted Flakes. When I was a kid, my preference kept changing -- Raisin Bran, then Foot Loops, then Mini-Wheats. I'd eat it every day until I was sick of it and needed to find something new. We were NEVER allowed to have Honey Smacks or Apple Jacks: "too much sugar" according to my mother.

Tess said...

Oh, I used to love those packages of the little boxes! Good times.

I practically LIVED on All Bran when I was pregnant.

Leah B said...

I love Raisin Bran and Crispix ... yummy! And of course Rice Krispies when in "treats".

Superjules said...

I like Crispix, Special K, and Corn Flakes if I'm in the mood for savory. I like Froot loops dry and OMG CORN POPS with milk are HEAVEN.

Elizabeth said...

I eat Special K, but oh, I love love love Frosted Mini Wheats.
Also, it would be TREMENDOUSLY awesome if they could make the Rice Krispies gluten free, so I'm just putting that out there for the Kelloggs people to get busy working on!

I love Smart Start and my kid's favorite is Frosted Mini Wheats. When I was a kid we had cornflakes and Rice Crispies a lot.

Shari said...

I really like the raisin bran crunch and cracklin oat bran, and my son likes the red berries Special K. He calls it the "red" cereal (did you know that all cereals are named by color?)

Farrell said...

Special K, Frosted Flakes, Fruit Loops, Mueslix, Rice Krispies.

divrchk said...

My son is all about the Froot Loops but I'm eating Rice Crispies every morning for breakfast.

Manda said...

I love Raisin Bran Crunch (with Chocolate Special K in close second) and my daughter and husband are Frosted Mini-Wheaters all the way! We eat A LOT of cereal and take it VERY seriously. We always have at least five boxes!

leashah said...

I used to LOVE FrootLoops as a kid. Now, not so much. We get the strawberry mini wheats a lot.

As a kid I LOVED Frosted Flakes, but I only got to eat them at my grandparents or if we got the little boxes when we went camping. At home my favorite was Crispix! Now I like Special K Red Berries, but I still hope for Frosted Flakes when I visit my grandpa :-)

distracted by genius said...

Oh my goodness, I left my comment before I read your paragraph that is phrased almost identically... maybe we had the same childhood?!

We also liked the raisin bran at home, though I think my mom liked it more than I did. I just commented to my mom yesterday that she better plan to start buying Frosted Flakes so she'll be ready for my daughter (you know, once she starts eating solids...).

Leanne said...

I used to love Corn Pops, but now I only eat them if we get a sample-size box in the mail. I do buy Mini Wheats occasionally, though. I like them when they're half-soggy from soaking up milk, but still a tiny bit crispy.

Barb @ getupandplay said...

We are a cereal family! We love mini-wheats the best.

Anne said...

Crispex is great either in chex-mix or just dry in a baggie (as a replacement for chips in my lunch).

Fran said...

Froot Loops is the only cereal my husband will eat. All 3 of our kids like them too. The kids also like Apple Jacks and Cocoa Krispies. My favorite is probably Crispix which I like to make Chex mix with. I know, I know, it's not Chex mix if you don't use Chex but whatevs...

St said...

My kids love Fruit Loops, I love mini wheats and frosted flakes. I also like to bake with All Bran.

Erica said...

I love Cracklin' Oat Bran and Blueberry Mini Wheats.

Maddie's favorite is Kix, which isn't a Kellog's cereal. However, I'm sure she'd be head-over-heels in love with any of the sugary cereals. I mean, who DOESN'T?

Jessica said...

I usually only get the mini boxes for vacation and they love them all!

Tracy said...

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Fruit Loops!!! Did I mention that I LOVE FRUIT LOOPS???!!

sara said...

Smart Start gets me through my morning! Froot Loops used to be our treat cereal as a child, brings smiles :)

Gina said...

Raisin Bran was the only cereal I would eat as a child. I loved it.

Julie said...

I ate Cracklin Oat Bran every day in my cafeteria at college. And I wasn't the only one, because that was always the cereal that ran out first, even before the sweeter ones.

Shelly Overlook said...

Fruit Loops, no contest. I still love them to this day, though I also have a great fondness for frosted mini-wheats.

I'm fond of Honey Smacks (which were called Sugar Smacks when I was a kid---the marketing!).

When we were kids, we could only have cereal that didn't have sugar or another sweetener as one of the top three ingredients. Once a year, on out birthday, we got a box of whatever we wanted.

Of course, the time I was in the hospital for a week with a concussion (having fallen down the stairwell from the third floor and hit my head on the radiator), I came home to a dozen boxes of the sweetest cereals out there! I was 6, and I still remember how excited I was.

Giselle said...

Hands down, mini-wheats are our favorite. Mini-wheats are in fact the one cereal that everyone in our family can agree on. High in fiber, low in sugar, good dry or soaked in milk.

And my daughter eats chocolate mini-wheats as a dessert...they are super yummy too!

may said...

I used to eat cereal like it was no longer being mass-produced, but I've eased off a bit lately. My favorites used to be Special K (with or without red berries - but usually with), Frosted Mini-Wheats (saving the most sugary ones for last), and Frosted Flakes.

And Kellogg's makes Eggos, huh? Cheers to them for that!

I would eat Frosted Mini Wheats growing up and still do! Now I eat Special K with strawberries and Special K with chocolate when I’m feeling like living on the wild side :)
