This is the fourth of twelve weekly posts sponsored by BlogHer and Kellogg's. EACH POST will have its own $100 gift card giveaway. The plan is to have each giveaway start on Tuesday and run until the following Monday.
This week's topic is The Breakfast Squeeze: what do you feed the kids if you are in a huge hurry?
We DON'T skip breakfast. Our school system fairly BEGS parents to give children breakfast, especially on testing days, because it so dramatically improves their attention levels. I'd let the kids skip a shower before I'd let them skip breakfast.
Granola bars work well: quick, already wrapped, easy to eat in the car or at the bus stop. A banana works well: quick, already "wrapped," easy to eat in the car or at the bus stop. But I'm more likely to follow this formula:
Step One: Put cereal in baggies.
Step Two: Eat cereal out of baggies.
Step Three: Feel happy at how well this formula merges with cereal-related gig.
We do this on rushed school mornings but also when the bigger kids sleep in on weekends: when they finally get up, none of us want to wait around while they eat breakfast. Cereal in baggies, and we can get going. And it's common for me to get everyone else ready and then realize I haven't eaten my own breakfast yet, so I eat cereal out of a baggie while I'm driving.
If I found myself ROUTINELY in a hurry, I might pre-baggie cereal and load the baggies into an empty cereal box: even faster, even easier. This would also be a good way to use up uneaten dry cereal on unhurried mornings: combine all the remnants into a baggie and toss it into the box.
To enter the giveaway, leave a comment about your hurried breakfast on this post by Monday, September 6, 2010. Entrants must be U.S. residents at least 18 years old. One entry per post per person. Granola bars! But I also do the cereal in baggies sometimes.
Granola Bars and fruit strips and bowls of cut up fruit to bring in the car.
Granola bars too! Or cereal in a cup, dribbled with milk. The girls (oddly) don't like dry cereal. Weirdos.
Cereal used to be my go-to hurried breakfast of choice, with the occasional granola bar mixed in, but since my lap-band I'm supposed to focus on protein intake and also carbs don't go down so well, so I had to rethink some things. I don't have a commute so I don't have to worry too much about the mess, so I often have yogurt (Greek yogurt is a particular favorite since it has so much protein), and then I also keep individually wrapped cheese (both string cheese and Babybel) on hand for days when I do have to go somewhere or I'm on a call or something and don't want to deal with the slowness and possible messiness of yogurt.
Oh and also I like bananas with peanut butter on them in the morning. Fruit PLUS protein. AND yummy.
I generally eat toast or something similar in the car when I run out of time...but my husband eats PB&J for breakfast every day. I don't know what I would feed the kid if we were running that late! He's a cereal kid, but in a pinch would probably eat PB&J just like Daddy.
I do the cereal in a bag thing A LOT. So much so, in fact, that I've grown to prefer cereal dry vs. with milk. I'm odd like that.
Granola bars are definitely my main option on a rushed morning.

Unfortunately my son likes a hot breakfast. My daughter would be happy with cereal in a baggy. She's not to fond of eating the second she wakes up and the bus comes at 7:10!
If we're in a hurry, I'll just grab a banana and a yogurt (which gets eaten at my desk at work).
I grab a protein bar!

Granola bars, apples, or bananas!
Granola bars or bananas!
When I'm in a big hurry, I grab a granola bar.
mami2jcn at gmail dot com
We do cereal in baggies just like you Swistle!
Snoopyfan- WE ARE TWIN GENIUSES!
Nutrigrain bars (she won't eat granola bars) or I make a toaster waffle and she eats it just with butter.
Clif bars, or portable fruit like bananas! We also like those applesauces that are in squeezable pouches.
Bananas or toast or applesauce or yogurt or cottage cheese or yeah, dry cereal. Sometimes we eat toast in the car. We sound boring.
A tube of Simply Gogurt is our go-to-in-a-hurry-breakfast
My kid loves a "waffle in his hand" when we're in a hurry and thinks it's nothing short of awesome. Toasted waffle, allowed to cool, placed into the hand of the toddler. That and a banana and we're good to go.
You've covered every one of my go-to quick breakfasts, especially the baggie cereal. I have the best intentions to pre-make breakfast burritos to freeze & nuke for just such an occurrence, but have I done so? Nope.
For me, on the go breakfast is a Special K cereal bar (strawberry). I LOVE them.
When we are in a hurry for breakfast we will sometimes grab a piece of fruit, dry cereal in a baggie, a granola bar, or a Pop Tart.

When we are in a hurry I love to grab a Natures Path toaster pasty especially the blueberry ones and a glass of Simply Orange juice. Healthy and on the go
We totally do the cereal in baggies thing on preschool days. Maddie's a dawdler and never has time for breakfast before school. She also likes Nutrigrain bars.
A cereal bar or granola bar works for me in a hurry, but I often do cereal in a bag for my son on a busy morning.
mommydaisy@gmail.com
We do that a lot too, and I am also ashamed to admit that we do sausage in a bag quite a bit.
Daughter always has a smoothie with fruit, veggies, soy protein and p.b. that I make on Sunday and put in five different cups; that way she can just grab one each morning.

String cheese, freeze dried strawberries, bananas and/or blueberries in a snack trap with mum mums (Cheerios), or a toasted frozen waffle is our quick breakfast!
Sometimes on rushed mornings, I'll give the kids poptarts. *sigh*
I would rather it be granola bars, so I try to keep those on hand, but we end up eating them as snacks too often.
Myself? I eat a rice cake topped with peanut butter and banana almost every day...I am gluten intolerant. BUT the chaos comes with three kids who have adopted our procrastination habit. So, the alarms all go off at different times, my husband doesnt eat, or he is grabbing donuts at the gas station and racing the clock to dodge traffic. My son who is 13 goes right to the table, with my 10 year old daughter sauntering in later. They will sit and eat cereal or a bagel, Poptarts, sometimes waffles and ALWAYS I make them have a glass of milk for protein. My teen daughter hates breakfast and I DO make her take a baggy of dry cereal to eat during her "social" time b4 school. ( I found LOTS of these in her backpack last year...grrrr).
thanks much!

I hate to say it but when we are rushed we usually grab muffins at the gas station. Thankfully this only happens on sat. During the week it is toast and Special K with Berries.
My daughters love the frosted mini wheats too!
We do granola bars or Nutrigrain bars if we're in a hurry. I honestly never thought about a baggie of dry cereal for breakfast, though. Thanks for the idea!
Poptart, banana, or granola bar. Sometimes I freeze the leftover pancakes from the weekend. Then I can just pop it in the microwave or toaster and I'm good to go!
Cereal is good for hurrying...no cooking time!

Granola bars for sure...cheese sticks or Larabars (fruit and nut bars) but need to be eaten before getting to school and washing hands (b/c of peanut allergies there).
We are JUST getting started with the crazy mornings (One kid at Preschool and another in Kindergarten) so I'm a novice. Looking forward to your readers' suggestions. We do a lot of cereal bars.
In a hurry, a banana and a piece of toast works well!

If I have bananas, those are the easiest to grab. Pop Tarts or granola bars are next. Then maybe prepackaged peanut butter and crackers.

I almost never eat breakfast. It somehow makes me hungrier. BUT, if there's leftover pizza? Oh yes. Favorite breakfast.
robinredwing@aol.com
When I'm in a hurry, I grab crackers (usually Triscuits) and cheese.
I bring 1 1/2 cups of banana nut cheerios to work everyday and eat them dry one at a time. It seems to keep me from overeating and gives me something to do with my hands
I do cereal in a bag and milk in a sippy cup or granola bars.

Yogurt, a cereal bar, fruit, or dry cereal in a container works when I am in a hurry. The dry cereal also doubles as a snack at work later in the afternoon.

Fresh fruit if we have it, otherwise granola bars or a dry cereal in the to-go containers.

I am totally going to steal the cereal in a baggie idea. We give the kids waffles if they are in a hurry, my son almost always takes one with him. They never eat syrup or butter on anything, so they can always just take a pancake or waffle. It's super convenient, which is the ONLY thing about my kids that is!
i still eat my peanut butter and chocolate chip smeared bagel in the car. i just hope no one notices the peanut butter and chocolate stuck to my teeth and dripping down my chin...

aigcanada7 at hotmail dot com
Loose granola, a handful of crushed nuts (almonds and pecans) and raisins in a baggie with a side of banana. If I can find a decent drinkable yogurt it rounds the whole thing off.
Granola bars.... well fruit bars really, Nutragrain apple cinnamon are our favorite. If I give my little ones the granola bars with the chocolate chips, I end up with granola everywhere and they only eat the chocolate chips!
