Just My Size Try-On Session, With a Five! Hundred! Dollar! Giftcard Prize!

This is a sponsored review from BlogHer and Just My Size Sportswear apparel.

Hey, do you remember when I was all stressed out about a holiday party, and some of you recommended wearing a cute outfit to tamp down the anxiety but I despaired of finding one on short notice, and then I found the perfect outfit, which included an awesome sassy brightly-colored fitted button-down shirt, and I felt TOTALLY CUTE and also PERFECTLY DRESSED? That shirt was a Just My Size shirt, by Hanes, and I bought it at Wal-Mart.

And now let's fast-forward to July of this year, when I have in my hand a gift certificate to spend on Hanes Just My Size clothing so that I could write this review. Score much? JMS is a plus-sized line, and what I like about them even more is that they're inexpensive enough that they don't trigger my must! wait! for! clearances! impulse.

It was so thrilling to find a bunch of stuff IN MY SIZE, I even tried on a denim miniskirt. I KNOW, RIGHT?? It looks more like a knee-length on me, but my legs are shortish so your results may vary. I had to do some Photoshop retouching to my legs to hide all the scratches I've gotten recently while picking black raspberries. I really like the shirt, too.

Some JMS jeans, which I really liked. I might need to get a second pair. Plus a JMS shirt, super comfy and soft, with Bust-Enhancing Pockets.

And this is where the fitting room clerk said we couldn't take photos and called the manager, and the manager came over and asked me to "Please step over here" (no, really), and apparently Wal-Mart has a very strict policy that no one is allowed to take photos in their stores (because clearly there are huge security implications in...taking pictures...of outfits...), and anyway from now on the photos are taken by me in the dressing room while making a cough sound to cover the click. And I guess I was thrown by the unexpected managerial encounter, because I kept forgetting to look at the CAMERA.

I loved this shirt, but I felt like it looked too small so I bought it one size bigger. Now I'm second-guessing, because in the photo it doesn't look too small, so maybe I'm just not accustomed to fitted clothes? (Taking photos of clothes is so valuable! And not at all a security breach!) Same jeans again, because I didn't want to take them off.

Here are the jeans on their own.

Here's another pair I tried. These were pretty good but had the wrinkles dyed-on, and that looks okay in the photo (in fact, in the photo I think they're more flattering than the first pair) but in real life I felt like it made me look like I was straining out of the jeans.

Can you tell I feel kind of awesome in this? This is the wrinkles-dyed-in jeans (okay, I admit, in photos I'm reconsidering---I may need to go back and get those too) (see, Wal-Mart? this is what happens if you let people take photos) and a grey shirt that came with a necklace.

Fine, I'm going back for those jeans. And then I will always stand in Dressing Room Pose with one leg back and the other leg bent. (I will not, however, do the crossed-leg "I badly need to pee" pose so many celebrity women do. What is WITH that?)

Total change of pace. I never, ever, EVER wear sleeveless, not even to BED, but I was feeling adventurous. There had a ton of good tank tops, plus good basic camis like this one.

Cute hoodie! Model starting to look sweaty and frizzy. You know what would dramatically improve purchase-rates in clothing stores? Adjustable heat/cooling in each dressing room. Plus GOOD LIGHTING. It is so hard to feel enthusiastic about outfits when one's face looks yellowed and tired and damp.

I like this basic crew tee and think I'll go back for more of them. This is pretty much exactly what I usually wear, except this fabric was better and thicker than the shirts I usually get. They also had them in v-neck.

There were a ton of other things I wanted to try on but then Wal-Mart didn't have my size in it. There'd be a whole bunch of 4X and nothing smaller, or jeans in 16W and 26W bootcut but only petite and non-bootcut left in between. But if you shop at Wal-Mart regularly, it would be easy to keep an eye out: keeping things in stock is a classic Wal-Mart problem, not a JMS thing. After trying a bunch of things on, I felt like I had a good idea of what my size was in JMS and which styles in general looked good on me, and I don't think I'd even need to try on: HUGELY VALUABLE, since I don't usually get dressing-room time without three to five accompanying children.

The prize is a FIVE! HUNDRED! DOLLAR! Wal-Mart gift card. You could pretty much throw out all your old clothes and buy one of EVERY SINGLE THING in the JMS line with that, plus underwear and socks.

To enter, leave a comment on this post by August 31, 2010. Maybe tell me how cute I looked in something (flattery doesn't improve chances of winning, but I'm sure it improves the mood of the universe), or say what clothing item you'd try on, or suggest a different combination, or mention how many more clothes you'd buy if the dressing rooms were chillier.

One comment per person; you have to be at least 18 years old and live in the United States; no cheating. You can get an extra entry by blogging about the contest or putting a link to the contest on Twitter; then come back here and leave a link to show you did it. For more details, see the Official Rules.

AND you have a bunch of other chances to win: see the other Just My Size reviewers to leave flattering comments and see lots of other pieces from the JMS line. (I am definitely going to go look: now that I've poked around the racks, I want to see what other people put together.)

To do a little pre-shopping (there's a mix-and-match tool for those of us who get sweaty and frizzy but can't tell what we'd like until we try it all on), go to JMSstyle.com. It's really fun: like playing with paper dolls. It didn't have the jeans on there, and there were a bunch of capris/shorts my Wal-Mart didn't have, but I recognized a lot of the other things.

(screenshot taken from JMSstyle.com)

Maybe I should try on all my outfits with beige high heels? My green sandals suddenly look flat and dowdy. And I am totally going to try that thing with my hands.

If after all this you find yourself feeling all warm and lovey toward JMS, you can also friend them on Facebook.

I love those jeans. LOVE! & from Walmart? Who knew??! You truly do look fabulous!

Also, I think that pink shirt was perfect on you. Get something that fits well. I think too big clothes end up making a person look bigger than she really is.

The Walmart ban on photos is a little funny, though. Top national security and all that.

I really like the gray shirt with the necklace - kind of trendy but not really, and looks good on you.

Swistle, that grey shirt with the necklace and the perma-wrinkle jeans is HOTT! Love it!! Also the cami + skirt is a bit outside the box but very flattering!

Tess said...

Omg, I LOVE THIS POST. And I am so PROUD of you for persevering with the pictures!

That outfit with the gray t-shirt and necklace! ADORABLE.

laura said...

Swistle! You look AMAZING in the fake-wrinkle jeans and the gray shirt with the ruched sleeves! In fact, I think I might head over to Wal-Mart myself to see if they have more of those tops. Do you think the JMS stuff would work for me? I'm 5'8" and 185-190, size 14 or 16...which basically means I'm busting out of non-plus sizes but often the plus sized stuff looks too big on me. Whichever way I go, it's unflattering. Bleh.

sara said...

Love the gray shirt with the necklace! I would never think to pick up something like that, but it looks so great on you. I am inspired and must go find one now.

YES. I love that after you were forced to "stand over here," you kept taking the pictures anyway. Subversive! And, you look awesome. You're right, the pictures DO make you more tempted to go back and buy stuff. Silly Wal-Mart with their silly no-photo policy. And does it make it extra subversive that you did all this in order to give away a gift card TO THEIR STORE?

marilyn c. cole said...

You have to go back and get those wrinkle-dyed jeans, dude. As everyone else has said, you looks freaking awesome in them and the grey necklace-shirt. Agree with Shelly that the pink shirt fits well and looks great a bit fitted. The only problem with a fitted knit shirt like that is a so-so bra can totally show and be annoying, so. Excuse for a nice bra!

Megan said...

I agree, the jeans with the dyed in wrinkles look awesome on you. Not at all like you're busting out of them. I think you need to go get them! And then I need to get some too!

Jana said...

I am loving the skirts! The denim mini-skirt is so cute and I love the flowy, longer one, too. I honestly didn't think WM had such nice stuff.

P.S. I think Walmart may be embarrassed by the "People of Walmart" blog and that's why they don't allow pictures. (Well, that and all the security blah, blah blah.)

Saly said...

I love the pink shirt on you!! Love it. And the mini-skirt too for that matter. (insert sexy whistle here..)

Maybe Wal Mart has the ban on photos because of that People of Wal Mart website???

Farrell said...

I cannot BELIEVE the manager approached you about taking pictures. WTF?
I love the grey top with necklace, and the adorable hoodie
Also don't think pink top is too small at all!
I go through T-shirts like you wouldn't believe - I always end up spilling something on them, forgetting about it, and then throwing them in the washer/dryer without stain treatment. I can never have enough t-shirts.
Also, I want to win:)

Elizabeth said...

I love that first plaid tunic-y top and think it would look great with jeans. I've never been a plaid button-down kind of person but for some reason I have visions of myself wearing cute ones with jeans this fall...which would mean buying all new clothes...hmm...
Anyway I also think the gray top w/necklace looks super cute on you and it's a good thing to wear when you need something casual but want to look like you at least thought about what you were putting on.

Fran said...

Walmart doesn't ALLOW picture taking in their stores?? Have they not heard of peopleofwalmart.com?? Whatevs...
Swistle you are adorable!! Several of those outfits were perfect on you and like a lot of the others who have commented, I hope you took the grey shirt and necklace home with you!!

Brenna said...

Yes! My favorite outfit would definitely be the grey shirt/necklace combo with the dyed on wrinkle jeans. So cute.

St said...

I also love the grey shirt with the necklace and the faded jeans. So cool!
Question, does anybody but WalMart carry JMS?

amanda said...

Does anyone know what the pleated-negative-design thing going on in the shirt in picture seven is called? That seems to be getting really popular, but I have neither the correct term nor the right words to describe it.

I really like the first shirt on you, Swistle, and the jeans are fab. Good jeans are always hard to find in plus sizes, so I'm definitely going to check out the JMS jeans.

Jessica said...

Swistle, you look super cute in the jeans and the gray shirt with necklace. Also in others, but this one stuck out to me. I would LOVE a walmart gift card. As much as I pledge my allegiance to Target I still find myself shopping with the big yellow smiley.

Gina said...

The pink shirt is totally flattering on you! I need one (or 5). I just bought a JMS shirt at Wal-mart this weekend and I love it!

pseudostoops said...

You think WM is bad about the pictures? Try taking pictures of various wedding dresses at a wedding dress boutique. They threatened to not let me try on any more dresses, and refuse to sell me one. Which: um, their loss, right? It was confusing.

I LOVE the hoodie, and the plaid shirt, in particular, and the jeans are super flattering- both pairs.

Barb @ getupandplay said...

You look hawt, woman. I agree that you look rockin' in the gray shirt and both pairs of jeans. And I like the fitted pink shirt. It doesn't look too small to me- although, I know from personal experience that if something feels too small that I won't wear it.

You looked awesome in those jeans and that gray T. Woo! Sexy mama.

I so want to try this line of clothing when I'm out of maternity clothes.

And I could so use a $500 gift card.

Also? Trying on clothes is a total workout for me. I end up red and sweaty and hair a-tangled.

sherrypg said...

I bought some JMS capris this year and I really, really like them.

I have been tempted to ask if I could try clothes on back in the freezer. I'm a sweater too.

Sally said...

YES! It should be at LEAST 15 degrees cooler in the dressing room than the store in general. I love the dyed-wrinkle jeans and both gray shirts but especially the one with the necklace. You look super cute and you look like you KNOW you look super cute (if that makes sense) which just enhances the whole outfit!

Carrie at In the Hammock Blog said...

oh my gosh, you are so right about hot dressing rooms!!! it's like they want us to get hot and frustrated and leave without buying anything!! Also, the lighting is always terrible!! we'd buy so much more in cooler temps with great soft lighting! Thank you so much for the contest!!

You look so cute in the pink shirt! I think either size would work because the cut is so flattering.

kimcatus said...

Cute stuff!! I love the plaid shirt and denim skirt....too cute!!

I totally agree abouty the temperature and the lighting.....UGH! You'd think the retailers would want us to TRY on more....not hurry to get out of there!!

Leah B said...

My personal opinion is that you should get the pink shirt in the size you tried on. I just went through this myself with a whole bunch of shirts- I bought them one size bigger then tried on thinking they would be more comfortable and instead they just didn't fit right! I know what you mean when you say you are just not use to buying fitted clothes ... but the shirt looks perfect in the photo! And the grey shirt is cute!
Thanks for the opportunity to win a $500 gift card, goodness knows I could use it.

I think it is HILARIOUS that you just started taking pics IN the dressing room. I'm sure the guys in the security booth were having a coronary. This is true love for your readers to risk getting accosted by the Walmart manager.

I also think its fab to see plus size bloggers getting clothing deals too. I always feel left out of the cute clothing stuff because it's all a size 2.

And you NEED to go back and get those jeans. Awesome.

Meggan said...

My first postpartum non-maternity jeans were JMS jeans from WalMart, as I am now firmly in the plus-size category. I had shame about that at first, but you know what? They came in dark wash, petite and boot-cut and they fit me. So I am rocking them.

It looks as though you are rocking them as well. :)

Laura- Sorry it took me so long to answer---we've been without internet for a day and a half (I know, IMAGINE THE HORROR!).

I vividly remember being that size (mumble-mumble years ago) and ACK NOTHING FITS ACK---like, even if it "fits," the proportions can still be wrong. The JMS sizes start at 14W--which is like one size bigger than a regular 14, I think? They have a size chart that might help.

I like the gray shirt with the necklace, as in "enough to go buy one next time I have to go buy [expletive chain] cat food" (which will probably be like, two days from now)... and I will likely also look for the skirt.

To someone who asked earlier -- the gray top with designs -- I think it's called "sublimation".

Also, as a word of caution -- as someone who is generally a 26/28 in jeans, and who is also tall-- the JMS jeans run smaller than LB or Old Navy. Also shorter. However, the tops and dresses seem to run pretty true to size, and their knit shorts/capris/etc. run true to size also.

Will stop rambling now. PS, the pink shirt looks awesome on you.

There's a top on the JMS site that I'd love to try...the Embroidered Bib Tunic (and I love all the colors). Kudos on the fitting room photos, you're a brave woman!

Oh I want to win! Pick me! and I LOVE the gray shirt! with a necklace! score

Swistle said...

Wisdomandpeace- I wanted plain glasses so I wouldn't get clashes with the clothes, so I wore my plain nearly-rimless ones. Then I regretted it!

Swistle said...

Veronica- Your nieces are on Target posters??? You must be like "!!!!!" That's so cool!

Jeanne said...

I love the pink shirt on you and definitely do't think it looks too small! The necklace shirt is cute too, I hope you boought that one :)

I think the hoodie is my favorite (I'm a sucker for a good hoodie), but you rocked them all! Very cute outfits, I like your sense of style.

Rah said...

You were kidding, I know, but taking pictures of the try-ons is genius and they definitely should let you do that--you've inspired me to do the same thing next time. It's so hard to stand there with the "now or never" decision and not to be able to sort it all out right at the moment. It would be great to get to go home and peruse the pictures.

and by the way, you look so great in the pictures. Definitely get the jeans and the hoodie and at least one of the basic tees--that style looks great on you.

Christy said...

Good for you for sticking it to WM by taking the pictures anyway!

I think the pink shirt should be worn in the size you tried on. I think it's very flattering as shown.

And while I don't like WM much, I have an infant and diapers and formula are expensive.

missris said...

You look so sassy and cute in those photos! I really like the idea of taking photos in the dressing room. I must try that in the future...although in SECRET if I'm at Wal-Mart.

Robin M. said...

I do like the wrinkles dyed in jeans... very cute.

Omaha Mama said...

Just moved to a new town where WalMart is the main place to shop. Now there's something to look forward to next time I go! I like basic tees and those look nice. Glad you mentioned the JMS stuff, I'd never find it on my own!

Sheila said...

I love the gray shirt/jeans combo! I will have to check out those items for myself. :)

Clarabella said...

You should definitely go back & get those jeans. They look great on you!

Steph said...

I love the pink shirt! I think that it's fittedness makes it more flattering and that some of the other shirts may look better in a smaller size. You're smaller than you think you are!!

Jody said...

Love the grey t-shirt with the necklace and jeans on you. You look so confident in that picture that its kinda awesome.

Becky said...

First, a note about photos in stores; I don't know for sure, but I suspect the rule about photos is because there are some creepos out there who try to take pictures of people in the changing rooms without their knowledge, and this is the store's way of trying to prevent that. My cousin was in middle school and at Target one time and someone was reaching over the wall from the men's dept with a cell phone camera trying to take pictures of her in the changing room. Needless to say my aunt was PISSED, and now boycotts Target because she felt they didn't respond appropriately.

Anway, on to the fun stuff! I LOVE the grey shirt/dyed wrinkled jeans combo. I think these clothes are very flattering on you in general. You look so cute! And I agree that if I could see objectively in the dressing room (like you are somehow able to in a photo, but not in a mirror), I would probably buy more clothes too. Or at least better clothes. And AMEN on the dressing rooms are too warm thing.

Jodie said...

I think you look FAB! in the second outfit. I think the security thing is that they don't want people copying the clothes--you know people who can sew and all that.
BTW I don't shop at wal-mart (ever) but I wanted to tell you how fab you looked in that second outfit!

Brooke said...

I love that pink hoodie! Think I might have to hit up my walmart for one of those!

Don't mess with Swistle, Walmart! Hilarious story :)

I think it's a cute idea that they include the necklace with the shirt. I never feel like I can pull off that long necklace look, but it looks so cute!

Shoeaddict said...

Oh, I am going to the website now to check out the clothes. I, too, am curious to know about the picture taking at walmart...

cindy said...

I like the dark wash jeans on you better than the ones with fading. Did you get those?

el-e-e said...

My fave on you is the HOODIE! So hip. So now. :)

I think I've bought the same crew-neck or v-neck tees there. In fact, I have a lot of them. The other day I layered an orange one over a white one, because white alone was see-through. I felt very smart/cute.

Swistle said...

Cindy- YES. I was like "THESE DARK JEANS ARE COMING HOME WITH ME FOR SURE AND I DO NOT WANT TO EVEN TAKE THEM OFF TO BUY THEM." I would have bought two pairs, but they only had one pair in my size.

LA and BD said...

I am so impressed with those clothes from Wal Mart! I love the jeans and both gray t-shirts! You look so cute and "hip Mom on-the-go" as Clinton and Stacy would say!

Holly said...

I think you're right - those whiskered jeans are pretty flattering, but I would have probably felt the same way as you trying them on.

Also, what a great idea to take pictures, so you get a better perspective what outfits really look like.

I am surprised JMS has so many good looking options!

I hope you did go get those jeans!

Jeans are hard. I'm not plus-sized, but and short and if you find jeans that fit you well, buy them! and those fit you well (in the pictures at least)

AJ said...

I love the gray shirt and totally need a clothing spree. I'm a nurse who has a closet full of scrubs and very little real clothes. The big problem now is that I currently work in a long term care for developmentaly disabiled and they encourage us to wear casual street clothes so the residents feel more at home.

I thought that "no photos" policies were only for bridal shops and such - it seems so strange for Wal-Mart to enforce such a policy, especially since it gives you a chance to take a second look at the outfits (and thus purchase more clothing from them).

The pink v-neck looks very nice on you. I understand not being used to fitted clothing though, I do the same thing myself.

The gray shirt and dye-wrinkle jeans indeed look supa! And your write-up is so funny/clever.

Thanks
